Affiliate Disclosure and Top Picks
Technical Writer HQ now showcases our Top Picks—the tools, courses, and resources we personally use (and pay for), or ones we actively recommend to our students and clients. Every month, thousands of technical writers visit our site to make smarter decisions about their careers, portfolios, and documentation workflows.
What do we look for?
We look for resources that are:
- Built for modern documentation and knowledge work
- Designed with excellent UX (yes, we’re picky about usability)
- Truly helpful for real-world technical writing scenarios
- Innovative in how they solve documentation or career problems
Our goal is to be clear and opinionated so you can make better decisions, faster. Think of us as a practical guide for technical writers—not a directory of “maybe this, maybe that.”
What you won’t find here
You won’t find vague reviews that end with:
“At the end of the day, choose what’s best for you.”
Because if a tool is genuinely good (or bad) for technical writers, we’ll tell you. Directly. And we’ll explain why.
Let’s be honest—how objective is a tool when it reviews its own category? Big companies have big SEO budgets and often rank themselves #1 on their own “best tools” lists. That doesn’t help technical writers make smart decisions.
We believe you deserve clearer guidance than that.
We’ve also noticed many review sites avoid strong opinions because:
- They don’t want to upset partners or affiliates.
Many affiliate programs discourage negative commentary. That creates watered-down reviews that don’t actually help readers. - They try to recommend to everyone.
Broad advice helps no one. Technical writers have specific needs, and that’s our focus.
We stay focused on technical writing and documentation, because that’s our lane—and we’ve been in it for over a decade.
Let’s Talk About the Money
We built Technical Writer HQ’s content to be:
- Free to access
- Honest and independent
- Actionable and practical
So how do we make money?
Education & Training
Our certifications, courses, and training programs fund the majority of our work. These programs help technical writers build job-ready skills, portfolios, and confidence.
Affiliate Links
Some tools we recommend offer affiliate programs. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission—at no extra cost to you. Not every tool we recommend has an affiliate program, and we never rank tools based on payouts.
Sometimes we even negotiate discounts for our readers.
Industry Research & Consulting
Because we’re deeply embedded in the technical writing space, companies and organizations sometimes consult us about documentation trends, tooling, and workflows. The research we do often turns into free content for our audience.
Sponsorships (Clearly Labeled)
If something is sponsored, it will be labeled as such. If it’s not labeled, it’s not sponsored. We do not accept payment for “positive reviews,” and sponsored content does not influence our opinions.
YouTube Ads
Ads on our videos help support the free educational content we create for technical writers worldwide.
With these models, we stay independent, focused, and able to keep our content free for the technical writing community.
We’re here to give you clear guidance, not polite ambiguity.
Wishy-washy reviews are out.
Practical, honest insights are here to stay.
